SP-RV100 Inline RV Filter FAQs

What is the purpose of storing the cartridge in the refrigerator between use?

As with any RV/Marine filter or material that becomes wet, leaving the SpiroPure SP-RV100 wet in a warm environment can potentially create mold or bacterial growth. The carbon media does reduce the chance of this happening, however, we recommend allowing the filter to dry completely after each use, and storing in a refrigerator during long periods of non-use as is the industry recommendation for RV/Marine inline filter cartridges.

Will the RV cartridge remove the hose taste?

If you are concerned about hose taste in your water, we recommend installing the filter on the RV side rather than at the water source so that the filtered water does not travel through the water hose. We include clear instructions for either installation, both in video and in our manual. However, the SP-RV100 is also an effective filter for reducing bad taste & odor.

Can this filter be used to remove hard water spots in a car wash?

The SP-RV100 could be used as a DIY spot-free solution to washing vehicles as it does contain descaler media that prevents the formation of scale/hard water deposits on surfaces.

What about on a garden hose? Would I still have to refrigerate between uses if I use it regularly?

Yes, the SP-RV100 filters would be a perfect choice for use as a garden filter. Refrigerating in between would not be required for continual garden use. That is a recommendation for RVing use that may have several days to weeks in between trips and usage.

Can I recycle this filter cartridge?

RV water filters, while plastic, cannot be recycled in a regular recycling facility due to the inner components. SpiroPure does not have a recycling program at this time.

General RV Water Filter FAQs

Does the descaler media in your SpiroPure RV filters soften the water?

SpiroPure RV filters have German-made descaler media that will reduce hard water spots from forming in your plumbing pipes, appliances, and on your fixtures and surfaces. However, a descaler does not accomplish this by softening the water. A traditional water softener system uses resin beads to remove calcium and magnesium ions and replaces it with sodium ions, creating "soft water." Our descaler cartridges use an anti-scale media technology that transforms the magnesium and calcium into harmless, non-soluble micro-crystals. This has several benefits over a traditional water softener. While descalers prevent unwanted scale deposits that make cleaning more difficult and can harm appliances and plumbing like a traditional water softener, they do not have the need for electricity or messy salts. Instead, you simply replace the cartridge. "Soft water" makes soap more difficult to rinse, and you can easily use too much, leaving you slimy and slippery after a shower. Our filter will not cause this feeling. No added salts also means no added tastes or smells to your water, and the healthy minerals of calcium and magnesium are preserved. In addition, there isn't any harmful wastewater. In many areas, salt water softeners are banned because the brine wastewater produced damages agriculture and water supplies.

Will the Descaler media remove hard water spots?

The descaler media will assist in clearing hard water deposits from water heaters, water pipes, and other places where water is flowing continually, however, it will not remove existing hard water spots from plumbing fixtures and other surfaces. Instead, it is designed to prevent future hard water deposits from forming.

What does it mean by the filter lasting for 1 season? What is the gallon usage?

The SpiroPure SP-RV100 cartridge life, as with any inline filter, will vary due to individual water quality and usage. Once the cartridge has been in contact with water, it should be replaced within 3-4 months regardless of gallon usage. This is the same for any inline carbon filter that you will encounter on the market, and why we recommend the filter life as being for “one season.” Due to these factors, we do not list a specific gallon usage.
